Eastern & India

TIME ZONE FIELD NOTES

EST, EDT and IST:
which time do you mean?

One hour can change a meeting. Use the date and the intended Eastern rule, not the abbreviation alone.

The short answer

Time zoneUTC offsetIndia is ahead by
EST · Eastern Standard Time−05:0010 h 30 min
EDT · Eastern Daylight Time−04:009 h 30 min
IST · India Standard Time+05:30

Here, IST always means India Standard Time. The same abbreviation is used for other time zones elsewhere, so write “India” in an invitation.

For a New York meeting, choose New York

New York follows Eastern Standard Time in winter and Eastern Daylight Time during daylight saving. If someone schedules a call for noon in New York, its India time depends on the date.

If an invitation says “EST” in July, that wording alone does not establish the organizer’s intent. Confirm whether they mean fixed UTC−05:00 or local Eastern time.

Two dates need extra care in 2026

March 8: a missing hour

At 02:00, New York clocks move forward to 03:00. A local time of 02:30 does not exist that day. Choose a valid time before 02:00 or at/after 03:00; the converter will not silently move your meeting.

November 1: a repeated hour

At 02:00 daylight time, clocks move back to 01:00 standard time. New York 01:30 happens twice:

Choose the occurrence explicitly before copying or sharing the result. Converting from India gives a unique moment and includes the Eastern offset.

Crossing midnight changes the date

January 15 at 20:00 fixed EST becomes January 16 at 06:30 IST. In reverse, January 15 at 08:00 IST becomes January 14 at 21:30 fixed EST. Always copy the date as well as the time.

Sources and calculation limits

The converter supports input dates from 2000 through 2099. New York calculations use the browser’s IANA America/New_York time-zone data. Future government rule changes or outdated browser data can change a future conversion; keep your browser current and reconfirm important future meetings.
